Labor is the part of a window quote homeowners understand least and installers price most carefully. A clean, single-story like-for-like insert on the ground floor is quick work; the same window on the third floor over a stairwell, reached by scaffolding, can take two to three times as long. This calculator keeps the two apart: you enter the per-window labor from your quote, then apply a story multiplier for building height and a separate access multiplier for anything that slows the crew down. The result is a planning number from your own figures — not a bid.
The multipliers are labeled planning typicals: single-story ×1.0, two-story ×1.3, three-story or hard-access ×1.6. Keep the access factor at 1.0 when the crew can work off a ladder and park at the curb; nudge it up when scaffolding, interior furniture, security bars, alarm sensors or a long carry are in the picture.
Formula
labor = count × your labor $/window × story multiplier × access multiplier
Story and access are independent factors, so a two-story job with a difficult approach multiplies both: ×1.3 for height and your access factor on top. Materials, disposal and permits are separate line items — this tool sizes labor only.
Worked example
Ten windows at a labor price of $150 each on a single-story home:
10 × $150 × 1.0 × 1.0 = $1,500
The same ten windows on a two-story home lift the story multiplier to ×1.3:
10 × $150 × 1.3 × 1.0 = $1,950
Add a ×1.15 access factor for scaffolding on the gable end and it becomes 10 × $150 × 1.3 × 1.15 ≈ $2,242. The window price, disposal and any full-frame trim work sit on separate lines.
What drives window labor (and what to check first)
Before you trust any labor number, sort out three things that move it more than the window itself:
- Insert vs full-frame. An insert (pocket) window drops into the existing frame in well under an hour of skilled time. A full-frame replacement strips back to the studs, re-flashes and re-trims — often double the labor. This tool prices labor per window; use your quote's actual per-window labor for the method you are buying.
- Height and access. The story multiplier is a proxy for reach and safety setup. Second and third floors need ladders, scaffolding or lifts, and code-driven fall protection; that setup time is charged whether the window is large or small.
- Site friction. Old caulk and paint, out-of-square openings, security bars, interior shutters, alarm contacts and furniture that must be moved all add minutes per opening that compound across a whole house.
Common mistakes: reading a bundled "supply and install" price as pure labor (it is not), forgetting that disposal and lead-safe work on a pre-1978 home are extra, and assuming a per-window rate holds for a lone one-off — a single window carries the crew's whole mobilization, so its effective labor is higher. Get itemized labor from your installer and use this as a sanity check, not a bid.
